Nestled in a valley in Tirol, Austria the company Gottstein produces some of the world's finest traditional Austrian/German 'Walk' wool fabrics. This wool fabric is used to make the popular Tracht style jackets called, 'walkjacke', commonly found across the Tyrolean region. A 'Walk' (German) fabric is specifically a knit wool fabric that is then put through a long wet finishing process which shrinks it, making it denser, warmer and more durable. The process is called 'Walken' in German and is similar to producing a Loden Wool fabric but of course Loden is made from a woven fabric as opposed to knit. As experts in felting wool, they also produce extraordinary felt slippers as shown in these photos.
